Born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Amanda is the oldest of 5 with the mothering personality to match. Amanda started singing as a bona fide hobby when the music teacher picked her to do a solo in front of the whole school at the tender age of six. That performance was followed up with an imitation of JEM and the Rockers for her second grade music performance (diagonal haircut included).
The choirs and ensembles continued through high school. At Hamilton College Amanda was a member and musical director of the schools oldest all-female a cappella group Special K.
AMANDA ALDAG | soprano
After graduation she moved to rural Japan for 4 years where she founded and trained an award- winning countryside a cappella group called the Amigos. She currently also performs with the local educational vocal band, Snowday. In 2010, she joined the Board of Directors for the Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA) and currently serves as Vice President and Director of Programs.
When she's not singing random back up parts along with the radio or putting the stereo on repeat to help with the latest arrangement project, Amanda enjoys swimming, hiking, skiing, cooking and disguising her Philly accent. She lists her musical influences as everything from Mariah Carey to Michael Bublé to Eminem and declares herself as Elliott Yamin's biggest fan.
Laura's ultimate goal in life as a child was to be a check-out girl. Readers of this bio might find this puzzling. So, Laura would like to point out that she wanted to be the girl that checks you out at the grocery store. And by "check you out", we mean, scan your goodies...er, groceries. Coincidentally, it was the cha ching and the bada bing of the cash register that awakened her love of music. And money.
She attended Northwestern University, no affiliation to the airline or the region of the continental US, where she decided to join a co-ed group called the Undertones. She was best known for being able to multi-task while singing. She could sing the entire alphabet song backwards in French while being in the Half Moon pose on top of a horse.
LAURA MCCANN | alto
Euphonism was so thoroughly impressed with such feats and most of all, her life aspiration of being a check-out girl, that she was the first Euph member to be given the right to act like an idiot without judgement for a week. When she's not singing with the group, Laura likes to watch Redskins football because she's a homegrown alto (ones that aren't homegrown just aren't that nice to look at or listen to), ride horses (she really likes being green), kidnap small furry animals, and play with her purple clay dreidel. Be sure to approach her at our next show and ask her to show you her Harry Potter tattoo.
Johanna "don't toot your own" Horn is the newest woman of Euphonism. Also from the NOVA area, and sings SOPALTO aka the high and low stuff for girls. She entered the Euphonism universe like a firecracker that had mismatched socks on her feet. Fortunately, the party didnt stop at her feet and continued all the way to her voice that acts as a vocal chameleon. She learned to control this superpower for the good of her fellow man at Shenandoah University where she earned a Bachelors in Music Therapy. As part of her duties as a Board Certified-Music Therapist, Johanna turns her voice into Britney Spears, Celine Dion, or even Toni Braxton on command. For some very troubled people, Celine Dion's "My heart will go on" is the only song that soothes and shapes them into a happier and therapied soul.
When Johanna is not singing with Euphonism, she spends her time listening to 90's rap and R&B because she is confirmed to be 7/8 Black. She can also be found scheming of ways to incorporate her favorite musicians (such as Sara Bareilles and John Legend, among others) into her music classes and vocal repertoire. Hide yo kids, hide yo wife cuz Johanna gon' find a way to sneak in her influences.
JOHANNA HORN | soprano
"Secret Asian Man" is available for a variety of services such as sensual massage and pole dancing...oops, wrong website... Joe is a card carrying member of BALLS Male Modeling Agency. His look, "Dragonfly", has been called the stylistic hybrid of former members, Derek Zoolander and Hansel. His career has taken him to many exotic locales. His perfectly tanned and egregiously beautiful face has graced the covers of numerous national magazines and beauty product commercials. In the off season, he likes to spend his time playing extreme sports such as table tennis and badminton.
When Joe is not traveling around the world for glamorous photo shoots involving white horses, sandy beaches, and waifishly thin bikini models, he can be found signing autographs on heads of babies.
Joe joined Euphonism as one of its original members and likes to believe that he can sing better than Simon Cowell. He hopes that fans of Euphonism will appreciate him for his musical abilities rather than accepting him just for his looks.
JOE KANG | baritone/bass
Some readers may ask, "Isn't this profile too incredible to be true?" Joe would like to respond to those "astute" readers with a question of his own, "Is the Pope Catholic?!"
John Baer has been a music and singing junkie since his early years. He got his start belting out tunes in the schools, churches, various administrative buildings and street corners in his home town of Fredericksburg, Va, using nothing but a set of vocal chords and occasional accompaniment from a $30 plastic guitar. His high school singing group took him to the U.K. in 2000, where he sang in cathedrals and British high schools and was also sad to discover the Beatles museum in Liverpool to be quite a disap-pointment. (A 'Yellow Submarine' made out of cardboard was the least of its horrendous transgressions.)
From these inauspicious beginnings, John's musical successes rose to the level of slightly-less inauspicious. John entered college at Virginia Tech in 2003 wherein he got his first real taste of a cappella music, (barring a brief stint as a Gregorian monk during the late 11th century), when he joined up with Juxtaposition, an all-male a cappella group. They toured the east coast and even got the chance to sing for the whole Bush family, (minus Dubya) at an event for the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy in 2006. (This event later proved to be sadly ironic when it was discovered that nobody in the group had a clue how "Juxtaposition" was spelled.)
JOHN BAER | tenor/vp
These days he can be found performing with Euphonism as their tenor and vocal percussionist. His new role with the group has left him with a debiltating case of Percussion Language Disorder or "PLD", wherein he can only communicate using vocal percussion sounds (A snare hit means "Yes", bass drum kick means "No" and a hi-hat means "Hope you enjoyed the show!").
Charlie first tried singing a cappella in 1993, when he joined his high school's oldies and madrigal group. From there, it quickly spiraled into an addiction. He became a founding member of the vocal support group Gang of Six, which did not provide much help in his quest to kick the habit, as most of the group sessions devolved into rehearsing. This group would provide support to Charlie throughout his college career. At Vanderbilt, he joined and directed the Variations, a co-ed group on campus. However, they introduced him to the ultimate a cappella gateway technique: vocal percussion. The first time Charlie tried this, it solidified his addiction to a cappella, and he decided to embrace the harsh lifestyle. He went on to join and direct Temporary Reprieve at Wake Forest University, while quietly putting out 2 albums with Gang of Six on the side. Charlie has travelled all over the country and to the Bahamas to sing a cappella, including a stint in Los Angeles sharing a billing with the B-52's and Paul McCartney with Gang of Six. Charlie has been featured on many a cappella albums, and has twice been a judge for the annual Wootten A cappella Festival. Currently, Charlie is a member of the vocal band Euphonism where he lays down phat bass lines and assorted vocal percussion hits. He is not married to Scarlett Johanessen, but neither is John Baer.
CHARLIE FRIDAY | bass/vp
Jeeves strives to live by the German axiom "Gesang ist dasein" - to sing is to be. Jeeves began singing at a very early age - even before he was known as "Jeeves". Throughout his formative years, he was encouraged by amazing directors and fellow musicians to pursue his musical passions. In college, Jeeves began a love affair with a cappella music. Jeeves started the UMBC Mama's Boys during his freshmen year and, in the years to come, would help found the UMBC Cleftomaniacs as well. During his time at UMBC, Jeeves was made Maryland State Ambassador (now the DC Ambassador) for the CASA. Jeeves used his title to make contact with multiple groups throughout the state including Johns Hopkins Octopodes and Vocal Chords, Goucher's Red Hot Blue and Reverends Rebels, and to assist in the creation of groups like Towson's Purrrfect Pitch. Jeeves graduated from UMBC with a degree in English Literature and a Minor in Writing.
Since college, Jeeves adopted a motto from the Harmony Society - "Music is life, the rest is just details." Jeeves sang with the co-ed group Tonic & Gin in Washington, D.C. for two years, taking on the role of music director, arranger, high tenor, and vocal percussionist. Jeeves left the group to focus on coaching a cappella groups whether semi-pro, collegiate, or high-school level. Jeeves has worked with groups preparing for big competitions like Harmony Sweepstakes or ICCAs as well as annual local concerts. Jeeves' passion for the craft and his love for music pushes him to encourage others to stretch themselves vocally.
Jeeves is absolutely ecstatic to be joining Euphonism and hopes to bring a unique style and experience to the group. Jeeves is a featured writer for CASA, focusing on CD and performance reviews, as well as a leader of The A Cappella Embassy, a CASA organization for MD/DC/VA groups. As well as singing, Jeeves also plays bass guitar, piano, acoustic guitar, and cajon.
JEEVES MURPHY | tenor
Euphonism was created from a fateful Craig's List post that brought together several musicians at the Metro Center Caribou Coffee in downtown DC. Those meetings turned into rehearsals and rehearsals turned into shows. With bold first steps, Euphonism's first public performance was in front of 20,000 screaming Washington Capitals' fans at the Verizon Center in November 2006.
Since then, Euphonism has created a name for itself in the DC area and the a cappella community at-large with performances at the Mid-Atlantic Harmony Sweepstakes, East Coast A Cappella Summit, SingStrong, SoJam, local music venues, schools and festivals and recently opened for The Swingle Singers in NYC. The group provides all-vocal music entertainment from all genres for all ages.
Euphonism is a proud member of CASA's Contemporary A Cappella League and is also on the prestigious aritist roster of A Cappella Records .
