Joe Kang
Joseph Kang is seven feet tall! Yes, I've heard. Kills men by the hundreds. And if HE were here, he'd consume the English
with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse. He originally wanted to name himself HeMan as his American
name when he first immigrated to the states from S. Korea at the age of six. Unfortunately, his parents had the common sense
to reject the name choice and let him settle on Joe, based on the tv series of GI Joe. He has lived in various places but claims Northern
VA as his home town.
Joe has been involved with music since he was 4 years old, starting with the piano. He then took upon the violin at the age of
8 and is still playing it 18 years later. He is recording with two different bands/artists this summer. He hopes to make it back
to the Kennedy center to perform again in the future. Joe also is a burgeoning songwriter and is working on learning the skills
that are required for home studio recording and production.
Joe has been singing ever since he can remember but did not take it seriously until he was in college at Duke university. He was
introduced to a cappella via the Brown Derbies when he was applying to colleges. At Duke, he helped to found an asian all male
a cappella group that sang traditional a cappella songs and also asian pop arrangements at cultural events. The group utilized his
deep speaking voice for narratives and his ability to sing tenor as well. While at Duke, he also dabbled as a baritone in the opera
based vocal lessons. Joe's singing influences tend to be based in soul and R & R roots. His favorite artist to this day is still
Boyz II Men. Other artists he finds inspiring are Javier, Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Nat King Cole, and Sinatra.
